Tulane University, located in New Orleans, Louisiana, was selected on June 1, 1938, to establish a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit, becoming the seventh NROTC unit established in the United States. Since its founding, Tulane NROTC has maintained a proud tradition of developing and commissioning highly qualified officers for service in the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
Today, the Tulane Battalion consists of approximately 50 Midshipmen from six institutions: Tulane University, our host institution, and five cross-town affiliates—Dillard University, Loyola University New Orleans, Louisiana State University New Orleans, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Southern University at New Orleans. Through rigorous academic, military, and physical training, the program develops Midshipmen mentally, morally, and physically while instilling the highest ideals of duty and loyalty and the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Upon graduation and commissioning, our officers are prepared to assume the responsibilities of leadership, command, citizenship, and service.
Since 1938, Tulane NROTC has commissioned more than 2,150 Navy and Marine Corps officers, including 14 Flag and General Officers, along with numerous distinguished leaders in various fields. Learn more about the history of Tulane NROTC
Recipients of the NROTC scholarship at Tulane, or at any of our five cross-town affiliates, receive scholarships covering 100% tuition and fees, a book stipend, a monthly stipend, uniforms, and Naval Science textbooks. In addition, scholarship students at Tulane receive the Tulane Cooperative Room and Board Scholarship, which waives the cost of standard housing and a meal plan, a value of approximately $20,000 per year. All told, the NROTC scholarship at Tulane University is worth nearly $275,000 over four years.
NROTC midshipmen face demanding academic and extracurricular schedules. Students must take Naval Science courses every semester and must complete courses in English, Military History/National Security, and Cultural Awareness, regardless of their major. In addition, Navy-option midshipmen must complete two semesters of Calculus and two semesters of Calculus-based Physics. All midshipmen are encouraged to participate in at least one battalion extracurricular activity each semester. Activities include:
Drill Team
Intramural Sports
Marine Platoon
Color Guard
Aviation Club
Midshipmen routinely participate in student government organizations, varsity and intramural sports teams, campus ambassador programs, Greek life, and numerous university and civic clubs and organizations.
During the summer, scholarship midshipmen take part in summer cruise to receive exposure to the various communities in which they may serve in upon joining the Fleet. Learn more about summer cruise.
Upon graduation and successful completion of the NROTC program, midshipmen are commissioned as Ensigns or Second Lieutenants in the United States Navy or Marine Corps. Our graduates go on to lead Sailors and Marines in a variety of Unrestricted Line communities and occupational specialties.
