DLAB/DLPT/OPI

 

Tulane University Naval ROTC is the only foreign language testing center within a 5.5-hour driving radius of New Orleans, offering the following testing services:  

 

DEFENSE LANGUAGE APTITUDE BATTERY (DLAB)

The DLAB measures the aptitude for learning foreign languages and may be administered to personnel interested in:

  • applying for foreign language training
  • being screened for assignment to foreign language training
  • Cryptologic Technician Interpretive (CTI)
  • Olmstead Scholarship Foundation Program
  • Foreign Area Officer (FAO)
  • Personnel Exchange Program (PEP)

 

DEFENSE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (DLPT)

The DLPT is the preferred DoW test for assessing a service member's foreign language proficiency in listening and/or reading. Sailors may test to establish language proficiency, recertify for Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus (FLPB), or establish or maintain a language Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC).

 

ORAL PROFICIENCY INTERVIEW (OPI)

The OPI assesses a service member's speaking proficiency in a foreign language through a structured interview with a qualified language evaluator. A minimum of two weeks' lead time is required to obtain test approval and coordinate scheduling with a foreign language specialist.
